Call for Data

  • Have you been collecting data for years on your laptop, but are not sure what to do with it?
  • Do you have a favorite source or corpus that you think might benefit from digital analysis, but you are unsure how to begin?
  • Would you like to map something medieval or early modern, but don’t know which mapping tools to try?
  • Would you like to integrate manuscript images more directly into your scholarly argumentation?
  • What about simply using digital tools to tell a story from your research, so that you might disseminate your message more widely, or enrich it with the images and other media that are now so openly available to scholars?

Then come join us for a data drop-off event! These are just some of the things scholars are doing with their sources, in very productive ways. Using the link to the sign up form, tell us in 2-4 paragraphs about the kind of sources or data you would like to work with, what stage you are at with the project, and what questions you might want to ask using digitally-inflected approaches in your research or teaching. Data proposals are due February 28, 2021.

We’ll work with selected scholars to clean their data, then talk about what questions we might ask of it, and find a tool and approach to turn data into a digital object – whether a chart, a narrative, a map, a timeline, or textual analysis, for example. Chosen scholars will present a 5-7 minute flash presentation at the July 19 NCS Expo to explain their project and what they may or may not have learned about the sources using a digital approach.

All levels of DH proficiency are welcome.
